Hawks Take 3rd at Watts Summer Games

Posted Tuesday, June 12, 2012 by Gregg Makepeace
The Lady Hawks fought their way to a tough 3rd place finish at the 2012 Watts Summer Games over the weekend at Victoria Park in Carson.

The Hawks came in as defending champions and quickly showed why on Saturday by first defeating the San Diego club team LAX West 13-8, then trouncing the visiting Santa Barbara squad Laguna Blanco 15-3.

Sunday's single elimination tournament began with a rematch with their old Sea View League rivals Trabuco Hills. The Lady Hawks mix of JV and Varsity players jelled together and played brilliantly for a surprisingly easy 11-3 victory over a normally tough Mustang squad.

In Sunday's game 2, the Hawks easily defeated Glendale 12-1 while advancing to the semifinals against Louisville. There they finally met their match and ran out of gas against a premier level club team from San Diego. The Hawks hung tough in a 14-7 loss which is very respectable considering they fielded a half JV/half varsity team and were taking on a hand picked team of high school all stars.

This weekend's five games showed a lot of promise for next year's 2013 varsity Lady Hawk squad as the JV players melded very well with the returning varsity, showing great chemistry as a unit. They demonstrated a combination of speed, solid defense, and an array of offensive minded players that bodes well for next season. Go Hawks!
